Laura Flandorfer, a student at the computer engineering branch of the Hertha Firnberg Schools in Vienna, got to know research and science as part of her internship sponsored by the FFG. At the Cyber-Physical Systems Research Division she developed a pick & place machine to equip circuit boards with electronic components. For this she had to design 3D printed parts, assemble the electronics an program the machine. The interview is also featured on the faculty's website.
In this paper we explain basic idea behind CPS/IoT Ecosystem its effects on research and education. The CPS/IoT Ecosystem project aims to build an IoT infrastructure that will be used as a platform for research and education in multiple disciplines related to CPS and IoT. The main objective is to provide a real-world infrastructure, and allow students and researchers explore its capabilities on actual use cases. Publish–subscribe middleware is a popular technology for facilitating device-to-device communicationin large-scale distributed Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. However, the stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements imposed by many applications cannot be met by cloud-based solutions alone. Edge computing is considered a key enabler for such applications. Client mobility and dynamic resource availability are prominent challenges in edge computing architectures. In this paper, we present EMMA, an edge-enabled publish–subscribe middleware that addresses these challenges. EMMA continuously monitors network QoS and orchestrates a network of MQTT protocol brokers. It transparently migrates MQTT clients to brokers in close proximity to optimize QoS. Experiments in a real-world testbed show that EMMA can significantly reduce end-to-end latencies that incur from network link usage, even in the face of client mobility and unpredictable resource availability. Prof. Radu Grosu is holding a keynote talk on active projects of the CPS group during the final review conference of the EMC2 project. It is a major event in the EU project community as it is a final event of the largest project in the ECSEL JU. One of the topics covered in the presentation is CPS/IoT Ecosystem project as a leading initiative on CPS and IoT infrastructure in Austria.
On 20.03.2017 a first general assembly meeting was held at TU Wien. The goal of the meeting was define framework for the administration and technical execution of the project. The meeting resulted in an organizational structure of the project and a number of use cases that will be considered in the project. The official start for the project was set for the 01.06.2017.
